Over the last couple of months I have had little work to do and have been surfing the web an awful lot, an activity which requires near-constant use of the mouse. Recently my index finger has started hurting when I click, and hurts very very slightly all the time.

Shit.

Shit shit shit shit shit.

Like most geeks, I find the idea of RSI very scary. I've just remapped my mouse so I can use it (badly) in my left hand, and am busily hoping that use of a keyboard isn't going to aggravate it. Does anyone have any idea? Paul? CJ?

In other news, I went clubbing for the first time in nearly a year on Friday night (not counting the Way Out, which counts as a different, scarier experience). And needless to say, I had a lovely party last night, with discovery of a new potential shag, and a very very very unexpected co-topping situation. And today I have managed to make myself leek, mushroom and stilton filo parcels, a recipe that did not exist until I thought of it. Hurrah! I'm the new Jamie Oliver, me. Pukka.

are you sure its mouse use and not other things you've been doing with your fingers? Ooh are matron.
seriously though I don't know of things for rsi, my boss suffered so I can ask her if you like. What about getting a wako pad for your computer then you could use a pen for a mouse, people rarely complain of long term rsi from writing with a pen, although I am not sure what writers cramp is.

dying to know what happened after hannah and I left last night, but I suspect I'll find out over the course of the week.

btw liked the cyberman outfit with corset

I can't use a normal two-button mouse anymore cos the rheumatoid arthritis has damaged both my index fingers quite badly over the past 10 years. I've been using the Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball since 1999 and it works a treat. Takes a while to get used to but I like it now. You click with your thumb or ring finger and move the ball with your index or middle finger.

Logitech rules!
I got one of their mice which is shaped to fit in your hand, has an extra button so you can double click with your thumb, and a scroll wheel for going up and down web pages.

A mouse mat with a wrist support also helps (£5 from Ikea, £10 from Meltron) or a keyboard wrist support shoved under your wrist, but really I've found the only thing that keeps RSI at bay once it strikes is to take time off from the computer, like at weekends. And unsubscribing from all mailing lists, because hitting 'delete' or repeatedly doing 'shift-del' killed my fingers after 50 of them as well.

Hope it goes away soon!

I'm eating mushroom and leek as I read this - weird conincidence. Though mine's with caerphilly cheese, and pasta. It would have been risotto but I couldn't find any arborio rice in the cupboard. I made this recipe up too, but I refuse to be Jamie Oliver. Never have I said 'pukka'.
