Vignette on the tube

babysimonMy novel was boring me, so I put it away and looked up. The girl next to me is composing a text message. She's wearing a brown suede jacket and a red scarf, and had bleached blonde hair. The geek in me notices the phone is a Nokia 5210, the shock-resistant one for builders. Out of nosiness, I peer at the message, trying not to look obvious.
This makes things more difficult. I now absolutely have to read the whole message, but I'm much more determined not to be seen to do so. I wonder to myself of what innocent message this could be a fraction. I stare at random points in the tube, occasionally sneaking glances back at the screen but not seeing much. I think I've done quite well at this, as the angle of her head hasn't moved, but then I look at the woman opposite me. And notice that the woman next to me seems to be looking at my reflection in the glass. We pull out of Stepney Green.
She seems to have finished writing. I look again. As we're underground she's saving the message for later. And then she opens it again and pages through it.
I guess I wasn't mistaken then. I feel happy to be sitting next to a fellow pervert.
And then I realise that she had very little reason to want to re-read the message straight after writing it. She was showing it to me.
