Date: 2009-01-19 01:40 pm (UTC)Conventionally people whose primary interest is music buy stereo systems (as almost all music is only in stereo) while people whose primary interest is film buy surround systems (as most DVDs have surround). So maybe you should aim for a surround system? On the other hand it's difficult to get a surround system without filling your living room with speakers - I've done this but you may not want to.
Richer Sounds' cheapest stereo amp is currently £69, while their cheapest AV (surround) amp is £169. You would also need to buy speaker cable, the cheapest stuff it's sensible to buy costs 69p / metre. Richer Sounds is of course not the be-all and end-all of hifi shops but they're cheap and fairly accessible.
