Yup - the contractions help the womb return to its normal size. Orgasm may provoke them for a while, too. It will settle down in somewhere between two to six weeks. I hope someone warned her about this during ante-natal classes - otherwise someone wasn't doing their job quite right.
She was definitely aware that breast feeding makes the stomach contract. I'm not sure if she knew there would be contractions, as such, but I would imagine it didn't come as much of a surprise.
