Where did this silly fashion for translating "I like chocolate" into "chocolate++" come from? It's not even like it's exclusively geeks that are doing it.

i.WillGo ( they.stopDoing(it) ? sane : mad );

PS: I just had a thought - shouldn't it be called ++C?

It's an IRC thing. It refers to increasing / decreasing the karma of a term in a chatbot's internal state.

A fair amount of the propogation into some of our circles is probably my fault. :)

In any case, BS hardly invented the ++ and -- operators.

I'm pretty sure ++ and -- were introduced on the PDP-11 version of C (ie Unix C).

Partly because, IIRC, *foo++ = *bar++ compiles to a single operation on a PDP-11.

I'll check tonight. There's a reference in van der Linden.

It's part of "infobot" that you can alter a thing's "karma" with this sequence.

Batmop on #uk_goffs is an infobot. Me, [livejournal.com profile] kitty_goth and [livejournal.com profile] gothtart all use this phrase far too much.

According to Stroustrup himself, ++C was the runner-up choice. A gateway to lots more trivia on C++, etc is here.

Well it would have been ridiculous to try and do it in BASIC.
