When I was about 13 years old, I had a habit of using my skipping ropes indoors. One day, as I was merrily bouncing away, I smashed the lightbulb off the ceiling. In the dark, as I was feeling a bit of a fool, the still-active current caused the end of the wire to catch fire, and the wire to head up to the ceiling like some kind of Wile E. Coyote fuse.
I screamed for my Dad, who dashed up the stairs and put the fire out with a blanket, just in time.
Fortunately, my parents are nice people and their reaction was more "Phew! Well done for calling for help so quickly! Maybe you could stick to outdoors from now on? What about a nice cup of tea?" than what would have been a very well-deserved "You stupid bastard. Move out *now*." The ceiling in the room still bears the scorch-marks.
No matter how much of a fool you feel, somebody always has a worse tale to tell. At least you weren't about to burn Hannah's house down. ;o)
It was my house :) But the foolishness comes from the fact that I really had no reason even to want to know which plate was hot - it was just idle curiosity...

I do understand why you felt a fool; I just thought that sharing fool stories would be a good idea. Everybody is an idiot sometimes, after all.
