Dear Mr Simon MacMullen,

Your peak-time usage for this billing month has now exceeded your 15GB
allowance.
The highest level of restrictions will now apply to your connection. Large
file downloads, through Usenet, peer-to-peer, and other file sharing
applications will be blocked until the end of the current billing month.
Don't worry, you'll still get broadband speeds for most activities such as
browsing, emails, and gaming.

Of course, when I signed up to this, there was no 15GB "allowance". Plusnet unilaterally migrated me from 2Mbit unlimited to 8Mbit with a fairly small limit.

So, can anyone recommend an ADSL provider that doesn't suck, for when we move house? They would need to be able to provide a static IP address.

I'm currently with ZenADSL.
They've been very good to me. One time there was a BT fault (not Zen) not only did they chase BT, hound them till they fixed it, they also rang up my mobile phone to let me know it'd be fixed when i get home.

They get a 'Good Work Fella' Award from me. :)

They've been good for me too - although I'm not yet sure just how fast their 8MB service is (I took the faster/capped upgrade). Not sure if they still do the slower/uncapped services.

I've used them in the past for work, and they were realy good. The only problem we had was that the crappy modem they sent out sucked up too much power through the USB port which made it turn itself off.

I can't remember if we got a different modem, or a powered hub, but it was easy enough to sort out.

Another vote for Zen from here. Kitty and then me have both used them out of this flat, and apart from BT dragging their heels over the account handover, there have been next to no problems.

How long before the end of the billing month to go?

I've got plusnet myself, and that's the one thing I don't like either. I run all my really downloads to run after midnight, but I'm still averaging a couple of hundred meg/day with browsing, and what I do download.

Also looking for a ISP that does not suck,

Dont go with VIRGIN whatever you do, I have a 8mb/s a connect and I get the download speed of a 1.8mb/s.

BT so far are looking to be the best for cost/speed wise.
Pipex are also quite good.

I should definitely use them when I move.

Zen did not unilaterally upgrade me - they offered me a free upgrade to a faster service capped at 20Gb.

I've not used Zen myself but many, many people seem to think they're good (as some of the comments here have shown!)

I dunno about static IP addresses (whassat?) but I started using Bulldog when I moved a few months ago and have no complaints.

How come you have only got a 15Gb cap?

I'm with PlusNet, and I've had a few emails of warning, but just to put me on level 1 of bandwidth throttling, but I've got a good 30Gb at least?

Odd!

(If using Bittorrent apps, do use encryption on the transport and that gets past the p2p throttling by the way)

Not sure if Bittornado is a Windows app or you run Linux at home, but I can highly recommend Utorrent aswell - That does it in the connection options.

Any BT sites you'd care to recommend?

:-)

But I know what you mean with the frustration of the bandwidth cap, but the problem is that every ISP will introduce it, or has, and have just put it in the really really fine print. I was a bit annoyed at it, but my annoyance has lessened as they gave me DSLMax in return... Although it does mean I download more faster!! (doh)

We went with Eclipse thanks to various recommendations. They started off crashing about once a week, and for the last 3 weeks have been crashing at least 3 times a night, apparently as they are upgrading us from 2Mb to 8Mb speed for no extra charge, but have to test what contention ratio we can cope with, which was supposed to only be a few days of problems.

I'm not happy, especially as the login details for contacting them don't work...

After raising a case with them it has now got more reliable but the speed has dropped to 1.8Mb/s. It is almost certainly a BT problem but they seem hopeless at getting it sorted. I got a vast email of questions, most of which they should already know.
