A new pedestrian bridge has just opened in London (not the wobbly bridge; another one). This one is bolted on the side of an existing rail bridge.

Apparently the foundations for it were dug by hand, to avoid detonating any WWII bombs and flooding the Bakerloo line.

Is it just me or is that scary? There might be bombs here, but we won't look too hard in case we find one...

Hmm, I've been across the old Hungerford Bridge several times while they've been building the new ones, and there was very little evidence that they were doing it by hand, rather than using the dirty great machines.

The Bakerloo line is Not Very Far At All beneath the river bed - they put more material on top of it a few years ago. Were I a terrorist, I'd be tempted to throw a bomb or two off the bridge, timed to go off in the next rush hour.

Better to sink a laden barge with several charges along the keel above the Bakerloo line to direct the blast in the right direction. Otherwise it'll just make a big splash and you'd stand a good chance of missing the target.

I take my cues from Dambusters. There are a hunded and one better, non-explosive means to bring chaos to the capital. I spent a happy drunken evening brainstorming possibilities with Kate N'ha Ysbet after the Chinese pulled their pager disruption test on the American west coast a couple of years back.
